Australian Animals Quilt
Tips for making the Australian Animals Quilt
Use an assortment of as many or as few fabrics as you wish to create the blocks, frame them, and create the border. Use the photo as a guide for the placement of the alternating fabric and animal blocks.
Finished size: 54 ½” x 68 ½”
Make 12 blocks: I cut the six animal blocks at 12” x 12”, appliquéd the design, completed any hand embroidery and then cut the blocks down to 10 ½” x 10 ½”. This enabled me to center the designs perfectly in each block. The six fabric blocks were cut at 10 ½” x 10 ½”.
Frame each block: Cut 2 side borders each 2 ½” x 10 ½”. Then cut top and bottom borders each 2 ½” x 14 ½”. Sew the side borders and then the top and bottom borders to each block. (If desired, baste and then sew jumbo (3/4”-wide) rickrack into the seams as you attach the borders to the animal blocks. Press the rickrack toward the center of the blocks.)
Sew the completed blocks together in rows of 3 across and 4 down.
Piano key border: Cut ninety-eight 2 ½” x 6 ½” strips. Cut four 6 ½” x 6 ½” squares. Sew 28 strips together to create each of the side borders. Sew these borders to the quilt. Sew 21 strips together for each of the top and bottom borders. Sew 6 ½” squares to each end of the top and bottom borders. Sew these borders to the quilt.
Quilt as desired.
Sew the yo-yos to the quilt by hand.
If desired, baste jumbo (3/4”-wide) rickrack along the edge of the quilt. Catch it in the seam as you sew the binding to the quilt. Press the rickrack toward the middle of the quilt.
